Cognition in the Wild: Chapter 4

Cognition in the Wild Ch. 4: "The Organization of Team Performance"

Theme of the reading
The idea explored in this chapter is simple. Just as two or more people working together are capable of physical accomplishments that no one could achieve alone, so two or more people thinking together may be capable of cognitive accomplishments that no one could achieve alone. This chapter examines the ways in which the division of cognitive labor enables the navigation team to produce cognitive effects that are more powerful than those produced by any individual.

Reading
Orienting questions and issues to keep in mind:

What does it mean to say that the social organization of the navigation team can be interpreted as computational architecture?
How can a production system architecture produce stable sequences of action without any agent in the system being able to represent the entire sequence?
What are the computational properties of the navigation team? (pp. 225-228)
