Cognition in the Wild: Chapter 7

Cognition in the Wild Ch. 7: "Learning in Context"

Theme of the reading
Having spent six chapters describing the contexts in which cognitive performance occurs in the wild, in this chapter I use our knowledge of that context to finally begin constraning models of internal function. An important class of Wideware consists of the mediating structures that we use to control and learn to control our sequences of action. This chapter is an extended thought experiment concerning the interactions between external and internal processes and structure that might underlie our abilities to learn sequences of action.

Reading
Orienting questions and issues to keep in mind:

Why should we soften the traditional boundaries of the individual while studying learning?
What is a mediating structure?
What is wrong with the notion that "internalization" is a process in which something outside the person goes inside the person?
What is the importance of off-line "imagination" of on-line interactions with mediating structure?
What is the importance of the multi-modal nature of skilled performance?
Why can we often not say how we do what we do?
