Professors
Hollan and Hutchins have joined together to create the UCSD Distributed Cognition
and Human Computer Interaction Laboratory. Members of our lab are united in the
belief that distributed cognition promises to be a particularly fertile framework
for designing and evaluating digital artifacts. It extends conceptions of work
materials beyond individual interaction and challenges key implicit presuppositions
of current views. A central image for us is work environments
in which people pursue their goals in collaboration with the elements of the social
and material world. Our core research efforts are directed at understanding such
environments: what we really do in them, how we coordinate our activity in them,
and what role technology should play in them. We are developing
an integrated framework for research and graduate education that combines ethnographic
observation and experimentation with the design of digital work materials. This
framework makes a deep commitment to the importance of observation of human activity
"in the wild". | | Meet
