How to download digital video

Note: video files are very large. Be very cautious of disc space when you capture and save video files. Do not capture or keep more than you need. Protocols will be established for saving video files, so check back for a link to a web page explaining the protocols.

  1. Log on to the DEW computer.

  2. Connect the digital video camera to the computer by plugging in the FireWire plug in the camera's 'DV IN/OUT' jack. (For the Canon Elura camera and Make sure you have the camera on in the download mode - 'VIDEO').

  3. Start MGI VideoWave 4.
    • From the Windows Start menu go to Programs MGI VideoWave 4.

  4. Capture video from the digital video camera.
    • Once the program has completed starting up you will notice that there is a left vertical tool bar, within which certain functions will be accessible.
    • Click on the Capture icon.
    • The video will appear in the 'Capture' window of the MGI VideoWave 4 program. A set of buttons will also appear at the bottom of the main program window entitled 'Start Capture'.
    (picture)
    •  You can now capture sections of the digital video and download them to the computer.

    •  Use the play, stop, fast-forward, etc buttons in the Capture window to find the start of the section of video you want to download.
    • Rewind a little bit beyond your desired start point. (The capturing takes a few seconds to start and therefore can sometimes not capture the first few seconds of the section you were trying to capture, if you start right at that spot. Rewinding is a cautionary measure so that you are sure to get the starting point in the captured section. If you get too much before your desired starting point you can cut it later.)
    •  Play the video in the Capture window and then click on one of the Start Capture buttons, either Video + Audio, Video or Audio depending on what you want to capture. (You can only click on a Start Capture option if the video is in play in the Capture window.)
    • Once you have started capturing video the Video + Audio etc. buttons will not be accessible, one will change to a Stop button.
    • When you reach your desired stopping point in the video click on the Stop button in the Start Capture area.
    • An icon showing the first frame of the captured video section will appear in the Library window.
    • If you will not be capturing anymore sections of video from the camera you can disconnect the camera from the FireWire plug and put the camera away; otherwise make sure you disconnect it and put it away when you are finished.
NOTE: Because video files are so large be aware of the disc space being used and the disc space remaining when you capture video.

How to make a movie from captured video (the basics)
  1. Edit the captured section.
    • As previously mentioned an icon showing the first frame of the captured video section will appear in the Library window. Select the icon and right-click on Edit/Preview to edit and/or preview the clip.
    •  The video clip will be loaded into what was previously the Capture window, but which will now be titled Preview.
    • To preview the video clip: you can preview the clip by using the play etc buttons.
    • To edit the video clip:

    • Enter the Cutting Room: click on the Cutting Room icon on the left vertical tool bar of MGI VideoWave 4 program. The Preview window will become the Cutting Room window.
    • In the cutting room you can: cut out parts on the beginning or end of the captured video clip, making a shorter clip; extract still images or audio from the captured video clip; and more… the above are only the actions I have done. Explore yourself.
    •  Once you are satisfied with the video clip you have created in the Cutting Room from the captured video clip click Apply in the bottom right of the program window. The tailored clip will be sent to the Storyline. (The changes will not affect the original captured video clip that is in the Library.)

    • MGI VideoWave 4 is a very powerful program. There are many more things you can do to your video clips besides cut them into pieces in the cutting room. Explore for yourself.
    •  You can repeatedly edit a captured video clip or multiple captured video clips, adding more scenes to the Storyline.

  2. Produce your movie.
    • Once you have one or more clips in the Storyline you want to make into a movie you can produce your movie.
    (picture)
    • Select the clip(s) in the Storyline that you want to go into the movie (they must be in order, time will travel from left to right).
    • Click on File Produce from the program's top menu bar.

    • The Produce Movie window will pop up.
    (picture)
    • Make sure to select whether you want to produce the entire Storyline or only the highlighted clips, otherwise even if you selected clips before you came to the Produce Movie window the program might produce the whole Storyline.
    •  Select the type of file you want the movie to be. Be aware that the size of the file (and the time it takes to produce it) will vary greatly depending on the type of file you select. For example, MPEG is smaller than AVI.
    • Click Next.
    • Choose the destination file.
    • Click Produce.
    •  Note: production can be quite a lengthy process after this point, depending on the file type you chose and the length of the movie.

  3. You have now produced a movie and it will be in the destination file you selected.
