| Sony Licenses Pad++
Software | The
Science & Technology Corporation @ UNM, the technology licensing arm of the
University of New Mexico, announced Sony Electronics Inc. has licensed PAD++ software
technology from both NYU and UNM in July 1998. PAD++ was
developed jointly by researchers at UNM, Professors James Hollan and Ben
Bederson, in collaboration with researchers at New York University. Both Hollan
and Bederson left UNM last year for other universities. PAD++
is a graphical user interface on the UNIX platform which was developed under partial
sponsorship of the Defense Department's Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA).
The interface achieves zooming effects with the computer. These interfaces are
sometimes known as multiscale interfaces. Headquartered
in Park Ridge, N.J., Sony Electronics is a leading manufacturer and marketer of
audio, video, recording media, communications and information technology products
for consumer and professional markets. The company has more than 26,000 employees
