Towards a Homeostatic Operation System

This is an overview of my dissertation proposal. The primary goal is to develop autonomous mechanisms to enable a computer to respond to anomalies. My previous work has show that sequences of system calls can be used to distinguish between the normal and abnormal behavior of privileged processes; my dissertation will build on this work by creating mechanisms that adjust the behavior of the system in near real-time in response to system call anomalies. These adjustments should prevent an intruder from gaining access, and should increase a system's stability in high-stress environments. The proposed research is strongly influenced by the human immune system and by mechanisms used by the body to maintain homeostasis; however, my primary goal is to make a system that is useful from a computer science, not biological, perspective.
